Reverend Andrew Jackson Sims, affectionately known as "AJ," was born on October 4, 1947, in Wedowee, Alabama, to the late Douglas and Fannie Mae (Knight) Sims. On Sunday, June 8, 2025, he passed away peacefully at his home in Wedowee, surrounded by his loved ones.

AJ graduated from Randolph County High School and went on to work in the construction industry. He was a skilled carpenter and brick mason, dedicating many years to his craft to support his family.

At a young age, AJ accepted Christ and joined Canaan Baptist Church in Wedowee. His spiritual journey led him to serve faithfully and eventually answer the call to ministry to pastor at Canaan Baptist Church until he retired from those pastoral duties in 2023.

On February 28, 1968, AJ married the love of his life, Virginia Ann Sims. They were blessed with 52 years of marriage and raised seven children together. Virginia preceded him in death on February 27, 2021.

In addition to his service in the church, Rev. Sims also served his community as a member of the Wedowee City Council until his recent retirement. His leadership and quiet strength left a lasting mark on those around him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Sims; his parents; siblings—Eldora Molden, John William Sims, Arthur Ray Sims, Douglas Sims Jr., Joe Frank Sims, and Mary Bussett; and a bonus daughter, Juanita Childs.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Mary Ann Graham (Franklin), Jeffery Sims, Terrance Sims (Denise), Grady Sims (Angela), Chris Parker, James Bailey, and Anthony Parker; brothers: Ivers Sims (Vanessa) and Grady Lee Sims (Catherine); sisters: Lovie Mae Tyler, Annie Lois Marsh, Eva Houston, and Faye Smith; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, church family, and friends.

Reverend AJ Sims will be remembered for his faith, his deep love for his family, and his humble service to both church and community. His legacy of kindness, humility, and dedication lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
